When Bob and Jonwin Howden of Sentinel Homes Wanaka complete a build, they don’t see it as the end of the process. In fact, it’s just the beginning. “We’re here for the long run,” Bob says. “We will be here to do the right thing – not the easy thing if something was to go wrong.” With nearly two decades of building experience behind him, Bob is a believer in building homes that last and stay looking good, using quality materials and time-honoured techniques.
Bob was drawn to Sentinel Homes by his desire to build a business that offered longevity and scalability.
“We always had our own building company and were looking at moving it to the next level.”
“We started looking into purchasing a Sentinel Homes franchise two years ago, and after a few meetings with Stu and Guy and the other franchise owners, we knew it was the fit for us.”
Assuming responsibility for Sentinel Homes in the Southern Lakes region is something Bob doesn’t take lightly. He knows building homes isn’t just about wood and nails, you also have to build a partnership between client and builder.
“We understand that building a home is a massive investment and you need to feel comfortable with the company you build with. You’ve got to trust your builder – go with your instinct, and vice versa.”
Bob has settled in the Central Otago region with his young family and loves the outdoors and spectacular scenery on offer.
“We decided to settle down and buy a house in Cromwell — it has a good community feel and good sport and schooling facilities, not to mention the warm summers and lake at the doorstep, which makes it a pretty special place. When we get some spare time, we love to just get out and about, do some exploring around the area. Our kids like the outdoors, so it makes the weekends fun.”
Bob is making lots of plans for his Sentinel Homes crew. In the next 12 months, the team will be handing over their first home to an awesome couple in Alexandra, and working on a show home in Wanaka and an apartment complex in Queenstown. They’re also building a charity home, with proceeds from the sale going to Parenting Place.
This build is part of a broader partnership between Sentinel Homes and Parenting Place, which will also see homes built in Auckland and Tauranga. The sales of these homes will go towards the charity’s work programmes and resources, to encourage and support parents and young people. This partnership combines Sentinel’s passion for the family home with Parenting Place’s mission.
On a local level, Bob feels strongly about this project. “It’s a good way to show we’re committed to the community, and are proud to help out all we can with Parenting Place.”
